Day Four

Refreshingly Unconcerned With the Vulgar Exigencies of Veracity

(Iain M Banks prompt)

Animal spotting through the grime speckled window

Blinking as sudden trees flash by.

You solemnly list; a hare,

Three deer, a fox family out shopping and –

Here you pause and glance up through your eyelashes to check my face.

A unicorn.

Your brother, who currently – colossus like – tramples through your games

Snorts. and rolls his eyes.

Your lip quivers. You slip a fat paw confidingly into my hand.

Bravely – maybe it was just a horse. I only saw his back.

Decisively – instinctively complicit, I draw my line.

No, it was a unicorn.
